About the Events Returning for the 6th year, the Grand Civil War Ball will be held Saturday April 10, 2010 in a new historic location - the grand ballroom of the beautiful Scranton Cultural Center! Step back in time to the mid-19th Century and re-create the dances that were popular during the Civil War period. Dance the waltz, polka, Virginia reel, schottische and many others just as your ancestors did over 100 years ago. Live music provided by vintage dance band, Spare Parts. Two types of tickets are available this year: Spectator tickets are available for those who would like to watch but not actually participate as dancers. See photos of the beautiful, historic Cultural Center here. Not sure how to dance? No worries – it’s easy, it’s fun, and we will teach you!
There will be an afternoon dance workshop, taught by vintage dance instructor Martha Griffin
on Saturday afternoon, April 10.
Want to learn more about fashion during the Civil War and beyond? This year, our Sunday, April 11th event will feature a lecture & demonstration of fashions from 1860 on through the turn of the 20th Century. Called "The Victorian Lady Undressed", see what ladies of fashion really wore from their fancy underthings on out. A Victorian tea will be served during intermission and vintage dance band Spare Parts will return to entertain you with period appropriate live music! Click here for more information on the Sunday event. From out of town? There is plenty to do in Scranton. Take a tour of the Catlin House (home of the Lackawanna Historical Society), see several steam locomotives at Steamtown National Historic Site, or check out an antique electric trolley at the Electric City Trolley Museum. Plan to spend your weekend in historic Scranton and enjoy all that the area has to offer! |
